31 August 2024 - Schweiz This evening finds me on the train to Horw, where I'm staying at a hotel 20 minutes fromt the startline tomorrow. I'm excited about the race tomorrow, which is half marathon on a flat course around a lake, the Sarnersee. Hence it's called the Sarnerseelauf. The location is in Obwalden, the last canton I have left to run a race in. I've got a bit of pre-race jitters as usual. I'm worried about oversleeping, because that means I won't be able to complete my goal of racing every canton until next year. I'm a little nervous about the heat and the distance, but I've run a lot of half marathons! Although today the heat was pretty intense, it's still nothing like Nashville where I ran my first half marathon a decade ago. That seems like a lifetime ago. And my goal tomorrow is just to finish under two hours, which I haven't done at a half in about two years.
I've done 18 half marathons, averaging 2:10:43. If you drop the trail run that was Telemarks Tøffaste and limit to just road races then that falls to 2:06 flat. My last five were slower than both of those though. Hawaii I can chalk up to a stomach bug that had me racing between port-o-potties, but the last four were as bad or worse. But I've been doing a lot of running these past weeks. And eating. At 97.2 kg this morning my weight is definitely not where I want it to be. I wish I had more control in that area. Regardless of how I run, tomorrow I will still complete the goal of running in every canton. And that's something to crow about! |
