The place I booked to stay turned out not to be a room with a private bathroom and a kitchenette, but instead a bedroom in a guy's apartment. I was not hyped when he showed me the place. Then I met one of my fellow guests. She was from Albania and offered to make me dinner - pasta with mushrooms. I do not like mushrooms, so I went out for dinner. Finding a place willing to serve dinner at 5:30 wasn't really possible, but I did find a place that was willing to let me sit and drink wine until they started serving at 6. It was a black African who served me too, which I did not expect in this north Italian town. Immigration is replacing people everywhere I suppose. When I got back to the apartment I met the Albanian's Italian boyfriend. He was quite gregarious, wearing a Dodgers shirt, and speaking Italian peppered with the occasional English word for my sake. Naturally I ended up going back out with them to grab a drink. Well, she had a job interview at a restaurant and then we went to an Asian place that had all-you-can eat for him. She'd already eaten the mushroom pasta and I'd already eaten dinner, but somehow we ended up eating more. And they were both teetotalers, so just sake for me. Then we got back and Paulo, the owner of the apartment, was ready with beer and more conversation. Admittedly my memory is not complete, but apparently I am not terrible at understanding Italian. I guess I'd also said I wanted bacon and eggs for breakfast (included at this "hotel" according to booking.com) because I was greeted this morning by the two men smoking in the kitchen and Paulo, just wearing briefs, "bacon and eggs, right?" "That would be perfect." So I got a frittata with little bits of bacon mixed in to start off my day and I couldn't be happier.
