17 January 2026 - Caveirac

This morning before the race I visited the Musée de la Romanité to learn more about Nîmes early history. What a treasure! I was most surprised by the pre-Roman, pre-Gallic statues. The geometric costume detail is like nothing I've seen on this side of the Atlantic. Were they akin to the Basque? I want learn more!

I snagged a sandwich for lunch and changed into my running gear at the hotel. Then it was figuring out the bus to Caveirac which fortunately departs every half hour and is often late. I caught it by the train station where there is yet another statue of a crocodile which, while the symbol of the city, sadly don't live in the wild here anymore. There is a park nearby though.

In Caveirac the kids' runs were already taking place in the pouring rain when I arrived by the château. Acquiring my dossard was a bit of a challenge because they mixed up my first and last name, but we got it sorted eventually. I find that I am not prepared for the right season. My hat has no brim. But my wool long underwear I've been wearing in the Alpine snow should keep me warm even though I will be soaking wet from the rain.

. . . and I was. The route was a little bit through the town at the beginning and the end, but mostly along muddy pine forest roads through the hills. Oh, I'm so glad there were plenty of rocks! If not it'd just have been slipping and sliding. Still, I wasn't super fast and definitely felt the weight of my belly. Based on the cup they gave me it's one in a series, and imagine the others would be fun, too.
