18 January 2026 - Avignon

What can I say about today? I started off this morning with a run around Nîmes. The temples to Augustus and Diana. The spring of Nemoz. The tower on the hill above town. I was transported 2000 years through time. And then, before lunch, I visited the arena. Built by Romans, used as a castle by medieval knights, and today an event venue again for music and slaughter.

For lunch I stumbled into a medieval-themed restaurant and had some delicious rabbit. Tapas is really popular in the cuisine here. After that I visited the natural history museum, which had an excellent local geology hall covering Le Puy to the coast. There's now a volcanic crater lake I want to visit whenever I get to that part of the Camino.

Throughout the weekend the rain has been falling and I have been wet. My wool was great yesterday and this morning, but now both pairs of sneakers I brought are just soaked. It's been worth it though.

Tonight I am in Avignon, staying across from the Palais des Papes. Seven of them reigned here in the 14th century before decamping back to Rome. But more on that tomorrow...
