23 April 2024 - Genève It's been a couple decades since I read a John Grisham novel, but I picked up The Racketeer from a little free library and decided to give it a whirl. What fun! Grisham wrote the book in first person and it's a non-stop thrill ride. Realistic? No. It's an improbable heist story with the usual twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end. It's the sort of book that my dad loved and read dozens of every year. Driveling entertainment rather than edifying? Perhaps. But why do I have an antipathy towards being entertained by a book and yet none for the movies that I shovel into my brain every week? Maybe it's the time commitment. Maybe I should cut back on movies and watch more documentaries. I don't know. I do know that The Racketeer was quite an enjoyable book. ![]() |
