20 January 2026 - Avignon

Avignon still has their medieval city wall, which is always cool. Except for the long walk to the train station. I saw the Palais des Papes of course. It's a partially restored ruin and surprisingly empty. They were in the process of setting up a glass artist's exhibition throughout the castle, which seemed really out of place. Still, there was some good information about each of the popes who reigned there in the 14th century. And somehow the adjoining park on the hill is in the middle of a three year long closure for renovations, so I could only climb the steps to view the impressive castle on the opposing bluffs of the Rhône. The river seems like an old friend after spending so much time traveling along it last summer. Sadly it destroyed the medieval bridge from Avignon across it many centuries ago, although I still walked out on the small part of it that still exists. And I enjoyed wandering the streets and in and out of the many bookstores, both new and used. I'm still a bit scared of fatter books in French, so those I picked up are rather light. And now I'm sitting and writing rather than reading in the Starbucks in Avignon's second train station (this one's for the TGV, which for some reason doesn't go to the Avignon Centre station).
