Cultivation of Vitis vinifera takes place in French Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC), a government mandated regulation of the terrior, in the Rhône Valley, which flows down from the Alps in southeastern France. In the northern part mainly Syrah is grown, whereas in the south a variety of grapes are blended.
