One More Month Behind UsLast Blog | Index | Next Blog Books | Film | Trails | Vesuvio 31 Ianuarius 2023 - Adetswil For four years running (2022 | 2021 | 2020) I've dropped alcohol for a month. Other monthlong projects like 30 morning swims, The October Game (2022 | 2021 | 2019 | 2018 | 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 |) and Meatless March have been somewhat less successful but still useful exercises. And 4 weeks or so is a good period of time to try out something. Dry January has grown to such popularity in American circles that I have seen people advocating for "Damp January" instead. People are goofy. We're all on our own halting quests for self betterment. We set unrealistic goals (e.g. Project 90 and Project 25 last year), but along the way we learn something about ourselves and do often better ourselves. For me goals are often a headfake to put me on the path for the journey I want to take. Weight, exercise and food & drink choices are life. They are things we must deal with every day and keep dealing with our whole lives. There are milestones along the path, sure, but as long as we choose to live we have to keep walking it. This past weekend I brewed my first Bier here in der Schweiz - a Belgian Trippel with rose hips from the garden just like the Hippy Trippy I made in Nebraska. In a few weeks I'll bottle it. And in a few more I'll enjoy a bottle with a steak cooked on the grill. Giving up something for a time makes you appreciate it that much more! ![]() |
